How to Build Triple Bunk Beds - Buying a Triple Bunk Bed May Be Cheaper Than Building One

Have you wondered how to build a triple bunk bed? Thought possibly you may want to do it? Safety is of utmost importance when considering a triple bunk bed because of the added weight and many times added height. Most that are built at home, and even at some bunk bed manufacturers, are not up to par with the legal standards of safety not only required by the government, but required to keep the sleeping patrons safe.

Baby Bed Safety Rail

Safety regulations such as the width of the ladder rung, weight support, and the like are all changed drastically when moving from a double bunk bed to a triple bunk bed or loft bed. You can read about the safety standards for bunk beds here.

Baby Bed Safety Rail

Most who are handy at home may think that building a bunk bed is less expensive than purchasing a one, but may find after research that certain manufacturers who abide by all of the safety standards, and sell direct from the factory, may be the best overall value since they produce in volume.

After buying quality lumber, tools, hardware, and finishing stain to build triple bunk beds, you may find that you have spent close to 0 or more, not including your time. If you were to make a slight mistake, it could be detrimental to the integrity of the structure, and you may find yourself spending more to fix it as well. Do the research on the amount of wood, tools, hardware, and finish you will need and you will see the costs can add up quick.

When setting up three beds, one on top of another, the bed usually provides little head room for the top, middle, and bottom bunk, making the bed very uncomfortable and not allowing anyone to sit up in bed. Making the bed taller if you have tall enough ceilings can also make the structure less stable and top heavy.

If you do decide to build a set of your own, you may want to consider putting the third bed in the unit as a pull out bed, or trundle bed. A trundle bed slides in and out from the bottom bunk, hiding itself during the day, and only jets out from the side of the loft bed structure when in use at night. This configuration is safer and provides more head room for the person on the middle and top bunk.

Installing slide tracks and rails for the third trundle bed, can be a task in itself. You must ensure they support enough weight to hold the trundle bed. Additionally, after the bed has been slid out, there needs to be enough support under the bed so that it does not break the tracks, bed frame, or other parts of the bottom bunk or trundle bed when someone lays on it.

One option to consider is to simply purchase a triple bunk bed rather than build one. If you purchase direct from a factory, you can save a considerable amount of money and ensure the safety and stability of the structure is at the highest possible standards. Because some manufacturers ship directly from the factory, the low overhead with no middle man mark-ups allows them to maintain the lowest prices online.

Regardless, choosing a triple bunk bed is a great choice, whether you build it or buy it, for sleepovers, or families that have children that need to share a small space. A solid wood bed will last you forever, and create memories for years to come for the kids!

Baby Bedding Sets - Comfortable and Colorful

Baby bedding sets are a bit different from adult bedding sets besides just the size difference. Typically, you will find a crib bumper, a fitted sheet for the crib, a comforter sometimes the set also includes drapes. The crib bumper is a stuffed long mini comforter type thing, that ties to the bottom of the crib rails right above the mattress so if baby rolls over they will not bang themselves into the bars of the crib. The bumper also insures that little hands and feet don't get stuck between the crib and the mattress. The crib bumper will match the sheet and the comforter. The crib sheet is always fitted and fits snuggly on the crib mattress. And of course the comforter is scaled down to baby size. They make decorating the nursery a breeze.

Types

Baby Bed Safety Rail

Baby bedding sets come in an array of styles, textures and colors. Some of the most popular are character themed sets, that have some time honored favorite cartoon characters. There is a trend to mimic adult bedding in style and colors, to give babies room a more sophisticated feel. There is also a movement toward all natural organic materials, this has become really popular in the last five years or so. A lot of people are opting for natural organically grown spread, to offset any potential environmental hazards associated with synthetic and chemically produced materials.

Costs

The costs associated with baby bedding sets really varies as widely as the choices vary. They can be purchased for under one hundred dollars or can break the bank at over one thousand dollars. There is no limit to the costs involved; it all depends on the budget for the nursery.

Where to Buy

You can purchase them in most any discount warehouse store, any store that sells baby items, baby specialty stores, online stores. Thrift stores are a great place to purchase them. Any store that sells linens and things will also probably have them. It all depends on how much you want to pay and whether there is any flexibility in the style. The more flexible the style is the more places you can shop at.

Baby bedding sets are very affordable and designed to fit into any décor or set the pace for the décor. A crib is not complete without one to fully decorate it and keep baby warm and comfortable.

Using Mirror or Glass on Closet Doors

When you think of buying a closet you have a good option of installing a sliding door to it. This has a big advantage if there is a lack of space and you don't want the closet door to keep banging against the wall or bed each time you open it. Sliding doors are indispensable in large cities with cramped houses which do not allow for the other types of doors. If you are concerned about the noise when sliding the door then don't worry as there are doors that slide on the closet and won't slam when you close or open them. They run on rails and dampers so there is no noise when you do not slide them nor do they move very fast or out of control. These modern sliding doors are a delight to have in the house.

Baby Bed Safety Rail

There are different types of sliding closet doors. There is the wooden closet door which can give the closet a traditional and warm look. They come in a variety of wood finishes and wood laminate and grains that each gives a different effect to the whole room. Wooden closet doors are preferred by many people as they impart a dignified look to the entire house. If you want to add to the functionality, you can even use mounted mirrors. This way you would even save wall space, besides giving a small room a more spacious look. Due to this effect of depth, these mirror doors are quite common. Mounted mirrors on sliding doors, thus, serve a dual purpose.

Baby Bed Safety Rail

Another good option is to doors made of glass and better still if they also slide. With these doors you can achieve a very open feel in the room as well as the closet itself. But one thing you have to keep in mind is to keep the closet very well organized and neat otherwise this will give an untidy look instead. On the other hand if you prefer glass and you want to go for glass sliding doors anyway, then choose stained glass or the ones with designs etched on them. Secondly, you can have a combination of wood and glass that would make it make it look pleasing to the eyes. In other words, you can play with your creativity by trying different combinations and at the same time save a lot of space.

So, when your main concern is to save space then sliding doors are the best option but even otherwise, these kind of doors will bring out the best in your overall decor theme.

Incredibly Affordable Nursery Furniture

When putting the plans together for your little one's nursery space, every parent wants the absolute best for their new bundle of joy! But of course we all have a budget to follow during this very important process. Knowing this, I did some research to find, what I consider, the best nursery furniture for the buck! Below you'll find information about DaVinci nursery furniture to see why it was chosen as the most moderately priced, beautiful and convenient baby furniture in today's market.

Baby Bed Safety Rail

DaVinci Furniture History

Baby Bed Safety Rail

This conservative company was started in 2002 by Million Dollar Baby with only two crib styles. DaVinci quickly branched out when they realized what a following they had with their classic styles, sleek designs and conservative prices. Soon DaVinci Furniture had up to eight collections to select from including coordinated toddler beds, changing stations and armoires for parents to create the best nursery to meet their needs.

DaVinci Furniture Options

When it comes to how or what you want to use in your nursery, DaVinci has cribs and storage furnishings in every size, style and finish, making your baby's nursery perfectly coordinated. What you invest in now can become items used later with the Combo Changer that can switch to a dresser, and the Convertible Cribs that can transform into toddler bed, day bed, twin bed and even a full size foot and headboard later. You can first choose one of their standard cribs, then when your tot is ready to move to a bigger bed, select a toddler bed in the same style to match the rest of the nursery furniture. Their construction and design gives you a set up that has a classic and traditional edge that still complies with your theme and décor.

DaVinci's Best Bang for Your Buck

There are several ways you can have all you want and need, plus much more by picking items that are multi-functional or in the same style you want, but dissimilar proportions. DaVinci's Mini Cribs are the exact style and quality of the standard size cribs, but take up less space and are much easier to relocate. With the conversion rails, you can transform the mini crib into a twin size bed and your child can continue to use this bed throughout childhood and beyond. DaVinci also makes dressers that start out as changers or dressing stations, then at a later time turn into big kid storage units that your child can use for as long as it's needed. For extra organization DaVinci also offers under the bed trundles or you can also add the storage unit Base Drawer under the bed. Later create a complete media or storage center in the bedroom or playroom with the whole set. Sky's the limit!

Security and Safety

DaVinci's mother company, MDB, has set up so many rigorous safety check points throughout their manufacturing process. Because of this, they have never experienced one recall in their 20 years of service. The family-owned company understands the importance parents put on ensuring they are providing not only a stylish nursery, but a secure one as well. Knowing this, DaVinci has made all their products with toxic-free finishes and paints and deep-set hardware, so if your curious little one wants to inspect, chew, or pick at any bedroom item, it's safe to do so. Parents who say, "We won't settle for good enough!" have trusted in DaVinci furniture to help make the perfect nursery or child's bedroom. Because they provide such quality furniture, DaVinci has been named as one of the Top 100 quickest Growing Private Companies in America for 2009 and many years before.

3 Golden Rules For Toddler and Baby Shared Bedrooms

As your first born starts his first steps towards independence, you might decide to welcome another little baby. If your second baby is due while you are still potty training your first, you are justified in feeling a little overwhelmed.

Baby Bed Safety Rail

Decorating the nursery is always a fun experience...as you have the liberty to do what you want with it. However, if the idea is of shared bedrooms for both, your toddler and baby, there will be some new things you need to be aware of.

Baby Bed Safety Rail

Relax and ease those palpitations. Decorating a space that is equally appropriate for both baby and toddler can be just as wonderful an experience. Remember these Three Golden Rules for shared kids room design.

Golden Rule 1: Make the Room Safe
Safe for Baby - If you are using the same baby crib that your first born slept in, you need to check it for any damages and wear or tear. Invest in a good baby monitor to help you keep track of happenings even when you are out of the room. A mosquito net will not just keep the bugs out, it will stop your toddler from throwing toys in or climbing in himself. Your baby will soon start copying the first born and his actions. Any toys bought for the toddler must be baby safe too. Safe for Toddler - When shopping for a toddler or twin bed for the shared bedrooms, pay special attention to the safety rails. Remember, he can now reach new heights. The decor hung or kept at baby safe distance need to be moved farther away. He can now climb onto the rocking chair - keep it away from the windows and keep the windows barred when you leave the room.
Golden Rule 2: The Room Must be Bright, Cheerful and Lots of Fun
Fun for the Toddler - He has been used to having everything to himself...until now. In the midst of the excitement of the newborn, he might feel a bit neglected. Why not include him in the decorating process. Make it a fun adventure, buy some new furniture pieces for him - a small table and chair set are a perfect fit. Fun accessories will make the room a place your toddler would love to spend time in. Fun for the Baby - A soft area rug that defines the baby space (and another for the toddler of course) can be chosen in the theme for the baby. Give the space 2 distinct looks for each of the occupants in the shared bedrooms. This will give them a feeling of belonging - their own private space. Tie the two themes in with a common wall mural.
Golden Rule 3: Keep Cool and Expect Conflicts
Calming a Cranky Baby - Babies will cry...especially when they need their sleep. Talk to your toddler and explain his responsibilities as an older sibling. He won't always listen though. If he doesn't sleep on time, either during naptimes or at night, why not let the baby sleep in your room. Once they are both asleep, shift the baby to his crib. Calming a Cranky Toddler - Used to being the center of your world, the toddler can get quite irritable when he needs attention and you are busy with the baby. Expect some ups and downs as both kids try to settle down and adapt to the new situation. Keep your cool and keep persevering...the kids will eventually learn to enjoy each other's company.

As more and more western families turn to the trend of young children sharing bedrooms (a common trend in many countries around the world), we find that children not only adapt quickly to each other, they grow closer and enjoy a deep bond that later physical separation also cannot affect.

So go ahead and chalk out your plans for that lovely nest to be shared by your toddler and baby...and as the bumps begin to smoothen out, see your kids spend more time together and soon leave you in peace (and planning your next baby, perhaps?).

Toronto Hippo Tours: I Went On A Bus - In The Water.......

Some time ago I noticed these odd shaped colourful bus-type vehicles in the streets of Toronto, and I was wondering what they were. I caught a second glimpse and I saw "Toronto Hippo Tours", and I realized that these buses carry sightseeing passengers not just on the streets of Toronto, but also in the waters of Lake Ontario. Considering that this form of intermodal transportation is definitely unconventional, it just recently came to me that I should do an interview with this company and go on one of the vehicles myself.

Baby Bed Safety Rail

They are definitely funny looking vehicles with a rounded snout, bright painting saying "Ride the Hippo", and an entry at the rear where you board walking up a set of retractable metal stairs.

Today I met with Drew O'Gilvie who is the Director of Sales and Marketing for Toronto Hippo Tours. Drew used to be a Director of Sales for Delta Hotels and obviously has a lot of tourism-related marketing experience.

1. Please tell us who came up with the idea of creating a company with a bus that floats? How long has the company been in business?

Geoffrey Lind founded Toronto Hippo Tours 5 years ago since he wanted to bring the "duck concept", the famous amphibian vehicle tours in Boston, to Toronto. Last year the company had 25,000 passengers and we expect to far surpass that number this year. Rather than calling ourselves a sightseeing company, we consider ourselves an "urban safari", a true urban adventure.

2. How many Hippos are there? What makes them special?

We currently have 2 vehicles in operation with a 3rd one that was just recently completed and is just waiting for final licenses, a complicated process that involves federal and provincial authorities and safety checks. The vehicles are Canadian-designed and built, based on a school-bus platform. Contrary to other places, they are not recycled WWII or Korean war amphibian vehicles. They are carefully safety-checked and greased every morning. We affectionately call our 3 amphibian vehicles Harry, Happy and Henrietta, our newest addition.

3. Please tell us about your route and your schedule. Are the tours narrated?

The Hippo tours are 1.5 hours long and spend about 1 hour on land covering the major Toronto sites, all professionally narrated by a tour guide who is also licensed in first-aid. We run tours from the beginning of May to the end of October every hour from 11 am to 6 pm.

4. Please tell us about the prices. Is it possible to book the vehicles for a private outing?

Prices are very reasonable at C.00 per adult, or C.00 for seniors or students, and C.00 for children 12 years and under. The vehicles can also be chartered and are frequently rented for special occasions both by business organizations and private individuals for birthday parties. At C0.00 per outing, which holds 40 passengers, this can be an extremely affordable special event.

5. Please comment on the special training that your captains and tour guides receive.

Our guides are certified in St. John's Ambulance and CPR, and are all restricted engineers. They undergo strict testing with government authorities as marine captains and they have to obtain licenses to become school-bus drivers for operating the vessel on land.

After interviewing Drew, I had a chance to actually sample the Hippo experience myself and I got on board, plunking myself down right behind the Captain, who in this case was a sporty-looking lady by the name of Catherine. We had another tour guide who competently and entertainingly mentioned the major sights along the way and cracked some dry jokes in between. Another guide by the name of Dan also accompanied us. He is just finishing up his road licensing and has already completed the marine portion of the licensing process.

The vehicle passes through the streets of Toronto at a very leisurely pace. Our route included major sites such as the Royal York Hotel, Union Station, Yonge Street with the Bay, the Eaton Centre and Dundas Square. We then headed over on Elm Street and down on Bay Street past Old and New City Hall. I particularly enjoyed the gargoyle story about Old Toronto City Hall, where a famous architect took revenge on Toronto city counsellors who criticized him for his cost overruns by depicting their likenesses as ugly gargoyles. We then headed up University Avenue past Queens Park (the provincial government buildings) and on to the University of Toronto campus.

From there we snaked our way down through the Garment District, admiring all of Toronto's loft conversions and condo developments past the CNE grounds (the Canadian National Exhibition grounds) to a ramp near Ontario Place, where we were getting ready for THE BIG SPLASH - the Hippo's entry into the water.

It sure was a weird feeling, being on a bus whose windshield is all of a sudden fully submerged by water. But the vehicle straightened itself out pretty quickly and we started chugging slowly into the waters surrounding Ontario Place. "Happy the Hippo's" top speed is about 5 knots, and the vehicle has a single engine that propels the bus' transmission on land as well as the propeller in the water. At 20 tons it's a pretty heavy vehicle and a special ramp had to be built to give it access to Lake Ontario.

We took a little spin over off the west end of the Exhibition Grounds where we had a good look at Toronto's only wind turbine (we are finally making baby-steps towards greener energy production....) where we turned around and headed back towards Ontario place.

While Dan was driving during the water portion of the trip, Catherine, the other captain, and I stood at the back of the vessel and had a great conversation. Catherine is a former insurance sales expert and after being laid off she went into a completely new career - first as a Hippo tour guide, and she has also become a fully certified and licensed Hippo captain. Catherine also knows lots about fixing the vehicle and doesn't mind getting her fingers greasy when she performs maintenance duties on the bus on a daily basis. In her off -months from November to April Catherine does some cool things, such as volunteering her services to an animal conservation area to protect sloths in Costa Rica, or travelling extensively to Cuba. As a matter of fact, Catherine is a pretty cool and interesting individual herself and I will be doing a follow-up intereview with her in the near future.

Back on land we passed by Harbourfront and headed back up towards the famous Royal York hotel. Shortly after we made a quick turn left and headed back to the Hippo Tours parking spot at 151 Front Street, just a tiny bit east of the CN Tower and the Rogers Centre (formerly called the Skydome), Toronto's multi-purpose stadium with the retractable roof.

Catherine and I had a chance to catch up for about 10 minutes after the tour was over, and we briefly talked about doing a language study trip to Cuba, something that Catherine was interested in. I shared some information with her since I have had the opportunity to study Spanish at the University of Havana earlier this year.

It seems to me that Catherine is a bit of an adventurer and I am really looking forward to catching up with her to find out more about her new, unconventional lifestyle that went from corporate sales to being a road/lake captain for 6 months of the year, and doing some other cool stuff in the months between..

Thanks again to Drew and the whole crew at Toronto Hippo Tours for spending their time with me and for giving me the opportunity to explore Toronto on a bus - on land and on the water.......

Top 9 Most Important Items for Your Baby Nursery

There are so many aspects of preparing for your newborn baby. They range from choosing a doctor, to deciding on a name to shopping for wipes and diapers. Some of the tasks are more bothersome than exciting. Luckily, preparing the baby nursery is a large task but it might be the thing that heightens the anticipation more than anything else. There are many things to consider and shop for. This article provides a list of what you will need and what to look for in each of those products.

Baby Bed Safety Rail

Crib: The crib can be one of the most expensive things you will need for your baby. It is also one of the better items to buy second hand. Either way, for safety reasons make sure that the slats are no more than 2 3/8 inches wide. Make sure that the crib has at least two heights for the mattress and has drop down sides. People with back issues or women who have had c-sections will have major issues if they don't have these options. If you are buying new, go with a convertible crib. They are solid wood and generally very sturdy. They are a one-time purchase and you will never have to buy your child another bed. They look great and will last. Although solid wood can be re-finished if needed, there are crib rail covers available that protect the crib from bite marks and other scratches. They are fabric with a waterproof layer and are machine washable. They are an inexpensive way to keep the crib in good condition as well as adding a finishing touch to the crib bedding set. If you are buying second-hand, make sure that the crib is not more than 2-3 years old. Safety standards on cribs are always changing and it is a good idea to keep up with them.

Changing table: Choose a change table that is about waist height. The best choice is a change table with a drawer. It keeps everything within easy reach, prevents the parent from bending over and keeps the table looking tidy. The change tables with two open shelves are not practical, especially when your little one starts getting into things. Some people decide to put a changing pad on a dresser, counter or table top. The pad should have a waist strap and have curved sides so the baby can't roll off. There should be shelves installed on the wall above the changing area to safely store changing necessities.

Clothes storage: Have somewhere to store your baby clothes, baby blankets and other paraphernalia. You will need some hanging space and some shelf space. This can be a proper dresser, shelving installed in the closet or even plastic drawer storage will do the trick. Try to keep your babies clothes organized as best as possible. A great way is to hang all of the clothes that are too big in order of size. This way you will always know what you have on hand for the next size of clothing. It is easy to lose track of what fits and what doesn't, especially in the early months.

Crib Mattress: A crib mattress should fit snugly in the crib. There should be no more than two fingers width between the mattress and the edge of the crib. A mattress should also be waterproof and firm. It is safest for infants to lay on their back on a firm surface.

Mattress protector: Purchase at least one waterproof mattress protector. This softens the plastic cover on the mattress making it quieter and warmer for your baby. They also make it easier to clean up messes. Ensure that the protector fits snugly and will not slip off the mattress and become a suffocation hazard.

Crib sheets: Choose crib sheets that are made to fit your crib mattress. Make sure that they are fitted sheets so they don't slip off the mattress. Have at least three crib sheets on hand in case of messes in the middle of the night.

Crib Bedding Sets: Most people decide on the crib bedding set first and then decorate accordingly. Choose a quality set that will be able to withstand the washing it requires. Most bedding sets include a crib sheet, bumper pads, a crib skirt and a comforter. It is a nice idea to choose something that will grow with the baby and leave room for flexibility. For example, decorating with teddy bears is cute for the infant stage but might not suit a one year old boy that loves trucks.

Nursery accessories: The size of your baby nursery will determine how many accessories you will be able to use. Almost every crib bedding set will have a wide range of nursery accessories including picture frames, toy boxes, kiddie-size chairs, fabric storage boxes and more. The more traditional accessories are mobiles, toy bags and valances. If you are limited with space or a budget, choose accessories that have a practical purpose as well as adding decor to the room. Some great ones are the laundry hampers, diaper stackers or the frames.

Window Coverings: Window covering are an important part of the nursery. Hopefully there will be many daytime naps so it is important that they block the sunlight. Many people choose to use blinds as well as curtains. It is very important to keep the cords for the blinds well out of reach. This can be a very serious strangulation hazard.

Enjoy creating your newborn baby's first bedroom. This is where they will spend much of their time. As parents, you will be spending a lot of time in your baby's room as well so make sure that it is set up and decorated how you like. Obviously, the most important thing is that it is a safe place for your baby to rest.

How to Prepare For a Long Car Trip With Children

You're excited about your upcoming vacation, but you're also a little worried. You know you'll be in the car for a long time on your way there - and you have small children. Small children in the car for long periods of time can quickly turn what should be an exciting start (or calming end) to your vacation into a nightmare. I've made thousand mile car trips with my three young children, then four young children many times. Here are my favorite tips:

Baby Bed Safety Rail

Boxes. Boxes are your friend. I actually got this idea from another veteran road trip mom. Get a lot of boxes together. Shoe boxes will work, or shoe box size plastic bins. These are going to be your lifesaver.

Baby Bed Safety Rail

Take one box per child and fill it full of little goodies for them. When I say "goodies," I mean small toys, pads of paper, markers (crayons if you don't trust them - or get the markers that only write on special paper), and other assorted books and treasures. This will be each child's main box. You can also use a backpack for each child for this purpose.

Then take a few other boxes and fill them with things. You can use assorted toys or you can make each box a theme, such as cars or paper dolls.

It's a good idea to stock toys up year-round for this. If you get little toys from family or friends, or as hand-me-down toys, you can put them aside. Sometimes you won't want your child playing with a toy all the time, or you don't want yet another little toy cluttering up your house. But the toy is perfect for this once or twice a year travel event.

These "extra" boxes will be stowed away in the car somewhere you can get to them easily. When you're far into your trip and everyone's patience is wearing thin, these boxes can come out and buy you a little more peace.

Practice. You need to practice with your children weeks before you go on the trip. Many children are used to babbling on and on in the car. You need to teach them that when you say be quiet, they should be quiet. There will be times on the road you need to concentrate completely and you need children to be quiet. My phrase is "Mama needs to drive now, be quiet." My kids learned that they need to listen and obey me when I say this. I always make sure to tell them "OK, you can talk now" when it's OK to talk again.

Stop frequently. Even though as adults we might push through three, four, or even more hours of drive time at once, this does not work for children. Plan at least a short stop every two hours. Let your little ones go to the bathroom and stretch their legs. Eat a meal, or serve a small snack if it's not mealtime. If you have a baby, this is a good schedule to follow with nursing that will help baby stay content and full. If you'll be stopping at rest stops you can have a kickball and Frisbee in the car for them to bring out and run and play with.

Books and books on tape. If you're not the lone adult, you can read or have another traveler read out loud to the kids. When your voice gives out, or if you're the only adult, bring along several books on tape or CD. These can buy a lot of time and are especially good as the day wears on and you want children to wind down for nap time or bed time.

Long car trips are never the best part of the trip, but with a little preparation and some sensible guidelines, even small children can do well and you can have a pleasant trip. Enjoy when you arrive... and enjoy getting back to home sweet home!
